How Satellite Area Measurement Works
When you draw a polygon on a satellite map, the calculator converts each point into latitude and longitude coordinates using the WGS84 datum, the same coordinate reference system used by GPS devices worldwide. The area is then calculated using geodesic geometry, which accounts for the curvature of the Earth rather than treating the surface as flat.
For most residential and commercial properties, satellite-based area measurements are accurate to within 2-5% of professional survey results. Accuracy depends on two factors: the resolution of the satellite imagery (which determines how precisely you can identify boundaries) and how carefully you place polygon points along the edges of the area you are measuring.
Google Maps satellite imagery is updated on a rolling basis, with most populated areas receiving new imagery every 1-3 years. High-resolution imagery typically has a ground resolution of 15-30 cm per pixel, which is sufficient for accurately tracing roofs, lot boundaries, and landscape features. For best results, zoom in as far as the imagery allows before placing your polygon points.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Google Maps area calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. There are no usage limits or watermarks.
How accurate are the area measurements?
Measurements use the same coordinate system as Google Maps and are accurate to within a few percent for most properties. Accuracy depends on satellite image resolution and how precisely you place your polygon points.
Can I measure roof area from satellite view?
Yes. Zoom in on any building in satellite view and trace the roof outline with the polygon tool to get the roof area.
Does it work for any location worldwide?
Yes. You can search any address, city, or landmark worldwide. Satellite imagery coverage and resolution varies by location.
Can I measure distances as well as area?
Yes. Use the length tool to measure distances like fence lines, road frontage, or property boundaries in addition to area measurements.
Is my data saved or shared?
All measurements are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded to any server. You can download a project file to back up or transfer your work.
How do I measure the area of my property on Google Maps?
Open Areaplane's Google Maps area calculator, search for your address, then use the polygon tool to click points around your property boundary. When you close the polygon by clicking the first point, the area appears instantly in square feet, square meters, or acres.
Can I measure acreage on Google Maps?
Yes. Draw a polygon around the land area and the calculator shows the result in multiple units including acres. One acre equals 43,560 square feet or approximately 4,047 square meters.
How do I measure my roof from satellite view?
Search your address in the calculator, zoom in on satellite view until you can clearly see your roof edges, then trace the roof outline with the polygon tool. The calculated area is the footprint area. For sloped roofs, multiply by a pitch factor. For example, a 6/12 pitch roof has about 12% more surface area than its footprint.
