Example project
Example: Estimate Lawn Area for Sod
For a 40 × 30 ft yard, subtract a 10 × 12 ft patio: 1,200 − 120 = 1,080 sq ft. A 5% cutting allowance brings the example order to 1,134 sq ft.
- Open the sample project, or search your address and zoom until lawn edges are visible.
- Draw separate area measurements for the yard and patio; subtract the patio total.
- Use your supplier’s roll or pallet coverage and agreed waste allowance to calculate an order.
Measurement limits
Imagery cannot establish legal property boundaries. Trees, shadows, image age, and capture angle can obscure edges. Verify important dimensions on site; a roof footprint also needs a separate pitch correction.

How do I measure the area of my property on Google Maps?
Open Areaplane's satellite area calculator, search for your address, then use the polygon tool to click points around your property boundary. When you close the polygon by clicking the first point, the area appears instantly in square feet or square meters. To convert square feet to acres, divide by 43,560.
Can I measure acreage on Google Maps?
Yes. Trace the land area, then divide the square-foot result by 43,560 to get acres. One acre is approximately 4,047 square meters.
How do I measure my roof from satellite view?
Search your address in the calculator, zoom in on satellite view until you can clearly see your roof edges, then trace the roof outline with the polygon tool. The calculated area is the footprint area. For sloped roofs, multiply by a pitch factor. For example, a 6/12 pitch roof has about 12% more surface area than its footprint.
