What Is a Square Footage Calculator?
A square footage calculator is a tool that measures the area of a space in square feet (sq ft) or square meters (sq m). It is used in real estate, construction, landscaping, and home improvement to determine how much material is needed, verify property sizes, or plan layouts.
For simple rectangular rooms, square footage is calculated by multiplying length by width. For irregular shapes (L-shaped rooms, angled walls, or curved boundaries), the area must be broken into simpler shapes and summed. Online calculators like Areaplane automate this process: upload a floor plan or draw on a satellite map and the area is computed instantly using polygon geometry.
There are two common scenarios. Indoor measurement uses a floor plan, blueprint, or architectural drawing as the reference image. You calibrate a scale by marking a known dimension, then trace rooms to get their area. Outdoor measurement uses Google Maps satellite imagery. You search an address, draw polygons around land parcels, roofs, or fields, and the calculator uses GPS coordinates to compute real-world area.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply the length of a space by its width. For example, a 12 ft x 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. For irregular shapes, divide the area into rectangles and triangles, calculate each one separately, and add them together. Areaplane automates this. Upload a floor plan or draw on a map and the area is calculated instantly.
What is the difference between square feet and square meters?
Square feet (sq ft) and square meters (sq m) are both units of area. 1 square meter equals approximately 10.764 square feet. To convert sq ft to sq m, divide by 10.764. To convert sq m to sq ft, multiply by 10.764.
How accurate are online area calculators?
For floor plans, accuracy depends on the image resolution and scale calibration. With a properly calibrated scale, measurements are typically within 1-2% of professional results. For satellite-based measurements, accuracy is usually within 2-5% depending on image resolution and how precisely you trace boundaries.
Can I measure area on Google Maps for free?
Yes. Areaplane provides a free Google Maps satellite view calculator. Search any address, draw a polygon around the area you want to measure, and the tool calculates the area instantly. No sign-up or software installation required.
What is the formula for square footage?
For a rectangle: Area = Length x Width. For a triangle: Area = (Base x Height) / 2. For a circle: Area = π x Radius². For irregular shapes, break them into simple shapes, calculate each area, and sum them. One square foot equals 144 square inches or 0.0929 square meters.
